Patriot Fans & Players Release Viral Video Targeting Trump
While some members of the New England Patriots took pictures with President Trump today, others boycotted.
Two of them shared why in a powerful video.
In the video, produced and directed by Patrice Lumumba Jones, several New England Patriots fans and members of the Super Bowl 51 championship squad spoke about both their love of Patriots football and the United States of America, as well as opposition to Donald Trump and the values he represents.
Both free safety Devin McCourty and defensive end Chris Long (who recently signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles) both spoke earnestly about why the felt the need to decline their invitations to the White House, and how they would explain the decision to their children if they accepted.
“I don’t believe in excluding other people,” McCourty said.
“My son grows up, and I believe the legacy of our president is going to be what it is, I don’t want him to say, ‘Hey dad, why did you go when you knew the right thing was to not go?’” Long said.
Fans in the video congratulated the players boycotting Trump’s invitation to visit the White House, and extolled the values that unite Patriots fans and New England natives — particularly in Massachusetts, where, as one fan noted Trump won not one single county.
Players and fans alike expressed their commitment to gender equality, environmental stewardship, inclusion, being kind to others, and democracy.
“I am the parent of two kids. Right now I feel that the leader of our nation is not being a role model to kids, and so I take that very seriously,” one fan said.
“For me [resisting Trump is] not political, it’s moral,” another fan said.
